Ron Kennedy went from fashion leader to winning coach
ST. PETERSBURG — For several years in the belated 1960s and early 1970s, Ron's Toggery established itself as a fountainhead of men's look in the Tampa Bay area and beyond. Its owner, Ron Kennedy, offered younger men a cumulate their fathers wouldn't go near. He successfully predicted their needs, which at the at intervals included flared dress pants and seersucker suits, velvet jackets and programme shoes.
Mr. Kennedy, whose discriminating taste made him a voice in the clothing enterprise, died Feb. 18 of heart failure. He was 64.
At St. Petersburg Elevated School, he lettered in four sports and was part of the school's mile-relay gang that broke the state record in 1963. He ran his quarter-mile leg in 50.7 seconds. He played tennis at what is now Troy University, then transferred to the University of Florida and graduated with a station in zoology.
He took out a loan in 1968 and bought Dream of & Son, a big-and-tall men's clothing store at 2070 Tyrone Blvd. N.
Though counterculture fashions had yet to reach the Tampa Bay precinct, Mr. Kennedy saw an untapped market for males 18 to 35. "He looked at the exchange and saw how rapidly it was changing," said brother Randal Kennedy, 58.
