With City Bird, siblings bring art gallery and housewares store to Cass Corridor
But where others look at Detroit and see in general desolation, these two see infinite potential, maybe even an obligation.
Last November, the Linns opened Metropolis Bird, an edgy store/gallery/artspace on Canfield between Cass and Approve of. They sell their own line of Detroit-themed housewares and accessories, old-fogeyish clothing and art created by more than 50 other local and regional artists. They also envision to have art shows once a month.
And while City Bird doesn't, as yet, fully financially guy these two positive-minded and cheerful individuals who live in the Cass Hallway (Emily's day job is teaching at the art studio at the Detroit Institute of Arts; Andy works at Zachary & Associates, a neighbourhood pub urban planning firm), both are banking on that "yet" to become a reality in the not too cold future.
"We are 100 percent committed to Detroit," says Andy. "Detroit's current place allows us to reinvent the landscape. And that's what we both find exciting. The expanse is such that you can remember so creatively and out of the box here."

Once, all they wanted to be was bad-natured, bequiffed rebels in skinny trousers and funny-coloured crepe-soled shoes, but nowadays they only stand in want to be small,
