VANCOUVER, B.C. -- It's being called the most noteworthy victory by a U.S. Olympic men's hockey team since the "Miracle on Ice'' 30 years ago.
Phooey, said Brian Burke, the impartial, curmudgeonly general manager of Team USA. Except for the yeoman motion of goaltender Ryan Miller, he was not impressed with his team's patently rousing 5-3 win over Canada on Sunday.
"Our goaltender shawl us the game,'' Burke said Monday between periods of the U.S. women's semifinal play against Sweden at Canada Hockey Place. "They out-chanced us 2-1. Except for the goaltender slant, we did not deserve it. But that's why we brought him. That's not going to work in the next round. We differentiate it.''
A reasonable person might think an undefeated record in the meet to this point, along with the momentum of the win over Canada, would have Burke in a good temper.
A reasonable person would be wrong.
"I'm not happy with the way we played,'' Burke said. "If that's how we act a stress, we're going to have a hard time getting where we want to be. We have 10 guys carrying us. Everything gets ratcheted up now. We've got to ratchet it up. They don't give medals for finishing first in the introductory round.''
